Thirsty Thursday: Money-Saving Starbucks Secrets

I have a Starbucks across the street from my job.  This is dangerous for two reasons:

ONE: I jaywalk every single time across a busy Chicago street to get there.  I’ve had at least one close call.  Worth it.

TWO:  As we all know, Starbucks is ridiculously expensive.  Beat the system by ordering smart!  It’ll save you money and probably some calories, too.

I LOVE espresso.  Crappy work coffee can’t compare, so when I’m craving a latte, I order this:

Americano, with room for cream:  This is espresso and water.  Add your own flavored creamer, i.e. peppermint mocha, french vanilla, pumpkin spice.  Voila!  You’re paying about $3.00 for something that would have otherwise cost you nearly $5.  It tastes the same or better.  I swear.

If special measures must be taken to stay awake, order a…

Redeye, with room for cream:  This is espresso and your choice of coffee, instead of water.  Again, add your own flavored creamer.  You’ll only pay a few more pennies for the extra jolt of caffeine.

And DID YOU KNOW?  You can order any size drink in a larger cup!  Get that grande Americano in a venti cup if you’d like to add your own cow’s milk or almond milk or soy milk… or some crazy milk I’ve never even heard of.  Breast milk?  Not recommended.

If you have any of your own secrets to saving money at Starbucks, please share!  There’s the comment section below, or you can e-mail me at

Workout Wednesday: The Minka Kelly Circuit

I have to admit, I only know who Minka Kelly is because she’s dated some pretty famous men:  Derek Jeter, John Mayer, and Chris Evans to name a few.  She was also Esquire’s Sexiest Woman Alive in 2010.  She’s 32, she’s gorgeous, and according to the Internets, she stays in shape by working the following circuit into her fitness routine.  When I’m feeling particularly athletic, I like to give it a go on the treadmill.  I have completed it 5 times through, as recommended… but it is VERY challenging.  Keep some water and a puke bucket nearby.  Even if you collapse, you WILL feel awesome and accomplished and invincible when you’re done… and maybe, just maybe, you’ll look a little more like Minka Kelly.

Recipe: 5 Ingredient Sweet Potato Chips

I used to hate sweet potatoes, but that’s because the only sweet potatoes I knew were the marshmallowy, buttery, casseroley kind served on holidays.  Barf!  I’m much more into eating sweet potatoes the savory way.  I love sweet potato fries.  I can’t be trusted around them, so I’ve come up with a way to enjoy all that salty, crispy, starchy flavor in a guiltless way!  There are only 5 ingredients, and you probably have all of them in your cupboard right now.  LET’S GO!

5 Ingredient Sweet Potato Chips

2 Servings

  • 2 small/medium sweet potatoes
  • 1 tbsp oil, your choice.  I used melted organic, virgin coconut.
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. salt

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Slice sweet potatoes as thinly and evenly as possible.  I used the slicing attachment on my food processor.  So easy.
  3. Throw sliced sweet potatoes in a large mixing bowl with oil and spices.  Toss to coat.
  4. Arrange sweet potatoes on a baking sheet.  They can be touching, just make sure they don’t overlap.
  5. Bake for about 15 minutes (depending on the thickness) on each side until crisp.
  6. Enjoy alone or with your favorite dipping sauce.

P.S. If you end up having sweet potato scraps leftover, zap them in the microwave for a couple of minutes, let them cool, and feed them to fido.  Dogs love sweet potatoes!

That’s not anger you see on Dexter’s face, by the way.  That’s unbridled desire.

Music Monday

After a 10 year hiatus, my obsession with the musical “Chicago” has resurfaced thanks to the Oscars last night.

I shall now spend the rest of the day making jazz hands, doing high high kicks, and whisper-scatting (skid-ewwwwwww).  I guess you could say I… HAD IT COMIN’?!??

That’s okay.  I’ll show myself out.
