Review: McDonald’s New Egg White Delight McMuffin

It’s here!!!!  On this day, April 22, 2013, McDonald’s rolled out its newest, healthier breakfast option, the Egg White Delight McMuffin.  Feast your eyes:

I actually had to go to two different locations to get the sandwich.  The first McDonald’s I went to didn’t have the egg whites ready.  I gave them a disgusted “NEVERMIND” and squealed away from the drive-thru.  I really wanted them to feel bad.  Odds are, they laughed at me instead.

As I mentioned in THIS post about a month ago, the Egg White Delight is different from the classic Egg McMuffin for the following reasons:

  • Duh, it has egg whites instead of a whole egg.
  • It’s made with what McDonald’s is calling a “whole grain” muffin, although I doubt if it’s 100% whole grain.
  • Instead of a slice of American cheese, the Egg White Delight has white cheddar.
  • The Egg White Delight has 250 calories compared to the regular sandwich’s 300, and an extra gram of fiber.  Ask for it without Canadian bacon, and you’ll save 20 more calories.

If you follow this blog, you know that I usually avoid meat.  In this case, I made an exception in the name of an objective review.  So here’s the deal – I’m giving McDonald’s an A for effort.  It’s really nice to see fast food restaurants attempting to provide healthier options.  However, I’m giving it a C for execution.  The egg whites were a little wet.  The white cheddar didn’t make a damn difference.  I was expecting it to be sharper and tangier than the American.  Nope.  It tasted like run-of-the-mill mediocre cheese.  Totally unexciting.

It’s also worth mentioning that aside from the Egg White Delight, you can now ask for egg whites with other McDonald’s menu options.

Have you tried the Egg White Delight?  Do you have another favorite fast food breakfast option?  Let me know!  We can chat in the comments section below, of you can e-mail me at thehungrytortoise@gmail.com.

Coming Soon: The BK Turkey Burger

Last week, I told you about the Egg White Delights coming to McDonald’s at the end of April.  Not to be outdone, Burger King announces today that it’s adding something “healthier” to its limited-time Spring menu – a turkey burger!  Here’s what it may end up looking like:

BURGER KING TURKEY BURGERBurger King already offers chicken sandwiches and veggie burgers, but according to reports, this will be the first time any major fast food chain has offered a turkey burger.  But health-conscious friends, PLEASE BEWARE!  Just because this sandwich has turkey in it doesn’t mean its much healthier than say, the Whopper.  Unless it’s turkey breast meat, which I suspect it’s not, the patty probably contains all parts of the bird, including the dark meat and the skin.  That means extra saturated fat, cholesterol, and general ickiness.  Seriously, when it comes to ground meat, you really never know what’s hiding in there.

BK’s turkey burger will sell for a suggested price of $3.99.  It clocks in at 530 calories, only 100 less than the original Whopper.  I haven’t seen an exact date as to when it will be rolled out.  Honestly I don’t care, because I don’t plan on trying it.  In my opinion, it’s just another piece of fast food trash masquerading as health food.

What do you think?  Will you give it a go?

Coming Soon to McDonald’s: Egg White Delights!

BREAKING NEWS, guys!  For once, I can say I’m excited about the direction McDonald’s is taking.  Recently, they began posting nutritional content on all of their menus.  Now, they’re making egg whites available in ALL of their breakfast sandwiches!  The star of the show is the Egg White Delight, a healthier version of the classic Egg McMuffin.

EGG WHITE DELIGHTAs you can see, the structure of the Egg White Delight is mostly the same as the Egg McMuffin.  The only thing missing is the yolk.  The sandwich comes with a slice of white cheddar cheese and Canadian bacon between a whole grain English muffin.  You read that right – WHOLE GRAIN!  The calorie content is about 250 compared to the Egg McMuffin’s 300.

The egg white option hits stores nationwide on April 22.  Will you try it?  I certainly will!  Stay tuned for a review next month.  😉

Friday Favorite: Native Foods Cafe

Each Friday, I gush about things that I’m obsessed with.  I’m not paid to do this.  I don’t get free stuff for the mention.  I just love finding awesome treasures and sharing the news!  Today, we’re sitting down at one of my favorite restaurants ANYWHERE, Native Foods Cafe.

Native Foods Cafe [Photo: Andrea McGintyNative Foods is my paradise.  I don’t eat out often, but when I do, this is my go-to place.  It’s a fast-casual joint (think Panera or Chipotle), only EVERY SINGLE THING on the menu is 100% plant-based.  Even the “cheese”.  Even the “mayo”.  Even the “corned beef”.  Even the “bacon”.   And it’s all impossibly delicious.  I’m promise, even your meat-loving friends will find something to drool over.  And if you’re new to the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle, this place lets you experiment and learn in a non-threatening environment.  The menu even has definitions for things you may be unfamiliar with.  So cool.

NATIVE FOODS

As an aspiring vegan, the thing I probably miss most is the reuben sandwich.  Lucky me!  Native Foods has one on the menu!  It comes complete with thinly shaved marinated seitan, Russian dressing, “cheesy” horseradish sauce, and sauerkraut piled high on grilled rye.  Lord Jesus, give me strength.  And a side of sweet potato fries.NATIVE FOODS REUBENNow, just because this sandwich is vegan doesn’t mean it’s low-calorie.  You know that.  You’re not stupid.  And that’s okay!  Native Foods has an assortment of lighter options available, including salads and bowls with lots of fresh veggies, tempeh, tofu and quinoa.  They even have an entire dessert cooler with plant-based brownies, cupcakes, and more!

NATIVE FOODS DESSERT COOLER

My only complaint is that Native Foods hasn’t figured out a way to exist on every single corner in America.  There are only a handful of locations, 14 to be exact, in California, Oregon, Colorado, and Chicago.  If you’re lucky enough to live near one, GO!  NOW!  HURRY!  And if you do, tell me what you ordered and how you liked it.  We can chat in the comments section below, or you can email me at thehungrytortoise@gmail.com.

Have a healthy weekend!
